Cubs

Cubs meet on a Wednesday during term time 6.30 – 8pm at our Scout Hut, unless advised otherwise. Cubs is open to boys and girls aged between 7 ½ – 10 ½ years of age.

The Cub Scout Pack is organised into small groups called ‘Sixes’ with 6 Cubs. They are usually identified with different colours. An older/more experienced Cub Scout called a ‘Sixer’ leads each Six with another Cub called a ‘Seconder’ to help out.

If you have any questions at any stage of your child’s time in Cubs please do not hesitate to contact us.

What we do

Cubs is all about fun, friendship and adventure! During Pack meetings we will work towards a series of badges – Activity, Staged and Challenge. Please take a look at the yellow poster in the Meeting Room to give you an idea of the types of badges we work towards. You can also purchase the ‘Cubs Badges and Awards’ Book from Akela for £5.

Attendance

We expect regular attendance at our weekly meetings (term time only). All of our Leaders and Helpers are volunteers and put a lot of time and effort into planning meetings and also have their own families and work to do on top of this.

Activities/Programme

Cubs will be working towards various badges at all of our meetings, as well as taking part in sleepovers, camping, and various outings such as litter picking, pond dipping, fire station visits, campfire, District events such as Swimming Gala, District Cub Quiz, Jamboree on the Trail (JOTT) and Jamboree on the Internet (JOTI). Cubs should try to attend as many events as possible as everything they do works towards their badge achievements. No two meetings will ever be the same! If your young person attends after school activities please speak to Akela about them as these can usually be credited to various badge work criteria.

Camps, Sleepovers & Parades

These are an integral part of our Cub programme. We encourage all Cubs to take part in these. These help us to put the ‘out’ into Scouting! Camps and Sleepovers are always great fun and include games and traditional Scouting activities such as pioneering, practical skills and camp fires. Please note that there is a cost associated with Camps and Sleepovers. We also like the Cubs to represent Scouting at our local Parades – St Georges Day in April (Patron Saint of Scouting), Mayors Parade in July and Remembrance Sunday in November.

Core Badges

There are a number of special ‘Membership’ badges obtained upon being Invested or moving on from the Pack or for time spent in the Scouting Movement.

Activity Badges

These allow Cubs to show their progress in existing pursuits, but also to try all kinds of new activities and form new interests. These are usually completed during Cub meetings but work is sometimes required to be undertaken at home. Participation and personal development, rather than meeting set standards, is the key approach.

Staged Activity Badges

These have been designed to provide a unified approach throughout the sections from Beavers > Cubs > Scouts > Explorer Scouts. They follow the progress of a young person through a specific activity such as swimming, hiking, nights away, musician, paddle sports, and many more. This means that a young person can gain whichever badge is appropriate to the level they have reached. It is possible, for example, for a Beaver who is an excellent swimmer to gain a higher level badge than a Scout who has just taken up the activity. A young person should only ever wear the highest level of each staged badge type that they have gained on their uniform. Older badges can be transferred to a young persons ‘Camp Blanket’.

Challenge Awards

Gaining a Challenge Award badge involves accomplishing a number of more ambitious tasks with the Pack or community. There are 7 Challenge badges across a number of themes, from the physical and outdoorsey to challenges dealing with the local community or issues connected with the Scouting world. Challenge badges are normally completed during weekly section meetings or Sleepovers/Camps and should only be completed at home when agreed with a Leader. When all 7 Challenge badges and 6 Activity Badges are completed the Cub Scout will receive the highest Cub accolade of the ‘Chief Scout Silver Award’.

What does it cost?

Monthly subscriptions are currently £10 per month x 12 months (£120 per annum). The level of subscriptions is set each year by the Committee. Until your young person is Invested you will be required to pay £2.50 per week (first week is free). We aim to have young people Invested within 6 weeks of their starting date.

After Investiture we ask that you set up a monthly bank transfer on 1st of each month. All details will be given to you at the Investiture. This saves time and paperwork for the Leaders. If your Cub leaves the Group it is your responsibility to cancel the bank transfer.

If the monthly bank transfer is not set up within one month of Investiture we may refuse your young person entry to the weekly meetings as they will not be covered by our Insurance. No monies will be accepted for other activities until the outstanding subscriptions are paid in full.

The Group offers a genuine hardship policy and will not exclude any young person through an inability to pay. Please contact Akela in confidence about ways we may be able to help you. We would never want to see any young person leave Cubs because of the cost of subscriptions.

What does the subscription pay for

The monthly subscriptions ensures that financially we are able to run safe, effective and efficient Cub Scout meetings and activities. Each year the Group is required to pay membership fees for every Invested member of the Group to the local District (Flintshire). This is currently £55 per child. The remainder of the annual fees (£65) goes towards paying for:

  • Administration, building insurance, membership of OSM, personal accident and medical expenses insurance, building insurance, utility costs (water and electricity), maintenance costs for the scout hut, security, fire safety, maintaining, repairing and replacing our equipment and to subsidise certain group events.
  • Costs of the weekly activities including materials, badges, certificates and prizes.
